Hello! I am Katrina Mabry the owner of Ubiquitous Black studios. I explore the intricacies of expression through various mediums, with oil paints serving as my primary conduit. My creative process usually begins with solitary contemplation and seemingly mundane observations. Whether its a spill of paint or a random sketch, my creations usually evolve organically. Drawn to the overlooked and underappreciated I find beauty in the unnoticed details of life. While my works may possess an aesthetic allure, they often harbor deeper, sometimes unsettling truths. By juxtaposing beauty with poignant narratives, I invite viewers to delve beyond the surface and confront the harsh realities beneath. Rooted in the richness of black American Culture my portfolio serves as both a celebration of heritage and a platform for discourse on pressing social issues. Through this body of work, I endeavor to provoke thought, emapthy, and foster dialogue on themes that resonate deeply within our collective conciousness.
Katrina’s artistic ability was already unveiled at the age of four. She created a very detailed depiction of Thomas the train during a homework session with her mother. Some years later she would create a life like pastel drawing of a horse in a barn. Impressed, Katrina’s art teacher submitted this piece to an art fair for local elementary schools students and featured it on a Local news station - which proved to be a rousing showcase of the young artist’s talent. By twelve her artistic prowess earned her a recommendation from her 8TH grade art teacher to attend the prestigious Summer Institute for the Arts. Despite financial challenges, Katrina's dedication led her to attend the program after unexpected support covered her fees. At the summer institute, Katrina delved into the basics of color theory, art history, drawing, painting and screen printing alongside her first exposure to fine arts museums. Selling her first painting at fifteen marked a pivotal moment in her artistic journey. Katrina joined the U.S. Army in 2006 working as a Supply Tech/Logistician and served on several movements, two deployments, as well as been to various parts of the world. After being stationed back in her home state of Virginia, Katrina retired honerabley as a Staff Sargeant after 17 and a half years of service. Katrina decided to actualize her longtime dream of becoming a creative and founded UBS. Currently, Katrina's work has been prominently featured in colabarative exhibitions, where her artwork achieved recognition at auction.
